LEWISBURG AREA HIGH SCHOOL
A bi-annual
newsletter for alumni and friends
Spring 1999
We
welcome the class of ’99 as new LAHS Alumni.
Recently Linda Nuttall wrote in her
Daily Item column some “Formulas for Academic Success” that she
gleaned from colleagues and students.
May we as older alumni pass these “words of wisdom” to you
since the advice is good for all of us.
· Be responsible for your own actions
· People are replaced for lack of attendance, for tardiness, and for poor attitude.
· Keep an open mind to other ideas and other people. Respect who they are and what they want to be.
· Do not let popular opinion or any other force control your ideals and mold you into something that you are not.
· Have confidence in yourself and never give up.
The
LAHS Alumni Association Board of Directors will again be working with Harris
Publishing Company on the next Alumni Directory which will be available in the
fall of 2001. We will be providing our
database to Harris who will sell the directory and network to find lost
alumni. The directory will consist of an
editorial section, a listing of graduates, a biographical section, a class year
section, a geographical section and an e-mail section, where the name of each
graduate will be alphabetically listed with one e-mail address. Your suggestions from our first directory
will be endorsed and we will try very hard to make the directory as accurate
and as up to date as possible. If you
have any other suggestions, please contact us at PO Box 38.
The
Lewisburg Schools, just like many other schools around the nation, are feeling
the effects of the events that have taken place in Littleton, Colorado. School administrators, emergency services
personnel and law enforcement officials have all worked together after a series
of bomb threats disrupted the educational process at the high school, middle
school, and the intermediate school.
The
Safe and Secure Schools Program is a result of their labors, according to Dr.
William Torok, Superintendent of the Lewisburg School District. Among many of the suggestions, the
administration has updated a more effective plan for crisis situations, has
purchased walkie-talkie’s to aid communication among teachers and cell
phones for administrators when it is necessary to vacate the building, has
instituted a locked door schedule where security cameras will be installed at
the main entrance of each school, and has instituted a badge system for
employees and visitors.
The
LAHS Foundation has donated $2000.00 and the LAHS Alumni Association has
donated the proceeds of the May 18th Spaghetti Dinner $1388.50 plus
$300.00 toward the cost of this Program.
Creating a safe learning environment will enhance the educational
process and will help to alleviate the fears in the minds of the students and
their parents.

Christine A. Voeste Russell ’84 and husband Tim and two girls, Tiffany Jo, 10, and Jennifer Lynn, 5, have been back in the area (Sunbury) for a couple of years. Her husband was in the US Army for ten years where they were stationed in California, Germany, and Kansas. Roy M. Good ’34 writes – thanks so much for your bi-annual report – it reminds me how fortunate I was to have grown up in the Lewisburg area and with so many superior people.
Terry Fregly ’63 noted in his letter of keeping tract of classmates by e-mail and sent us a very nice donation for maintaining our web site. Thank you, Terry!! He also wrote – My father Henry Fregley, who many of the “older” LAHS alumni will remember as The Photographer of many weddings, reunions and family events, passed away on October 30, 1998, at his home in Tallahassee, FL. My mother is alive and well and at this moment (12/98) is with us at our winter ski home in Salt Lake City, UT. Dad (84) suffered from an aggressive cancer of the lung. He never smoked a day in his life. We have begun construction on The Henry Fregley Eagle Scout Building at The Wallwood Boy Scout Camp in Tallahassee. The funding for this was donated to The Boy Scouts by our family. Dad was an Eagle Scout and remained active in Florida through various construction projects at Wallwood.
I have cut back on my work to the absolute minimum and have sold off many of my buildings and shuttle between Tallahassee and Salt Lake City. My two sons, Terry Jr. (14) and Kawai (15), are avid skiers who spend 6 days a week on the slopes at The Canyons in Park City, UT. They are on the Alpine race team. Joan and I shuttle the kids to and from and work on our new home now under construction on the East Bench (Eastern Mountains of the Salt Lake Valley) where we can see Nevada on a clear day.
Terry’s e-mail addresses are: tfregly@worldnet.att.net and tfregley@ccc-net.com.

Jennifer Malloy ’92 writes – After graduation in December 1995 from Penn State with a BA in English, I continued to freelance as a copyeditor and proofreader for several university presses and in 1997 started as a program assistant in Penn State’s Conferences and Institutes department. Having been accepted into Duke University’s MALS (Master of Arts in Liberal Studies) program for Fall 1998, I moved to Cary, NC, in August 1998. While attending Duke part-time in the evenings, I also hold a full-time position as Assistant Editor of InTech, the journal of the Instrument Society of America. ISA is an international society for measurement and control engineers and professionals. Expected date of completion for my degree is May 2001. I also expect to study abroad this summer at Oxford University in England.
Marcella “Sally” Lucas Swanger Kauwell ’52 writes – In 1987 my real father and his family found me through the Social Security office. Met my brother, two half-sisters and about 200 other relations. It was wonderful to have a family. My father passed away four years later but still have the family. I am divorced and remarried 3 years ago to a wonderful man named Bill Kauwell. Between us we have 8 grown children, 10 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. On October 2 of this year (1998) I found out I have a life threatening disease called Polyartistic Nodsum. It is rare and only two people out of a million get it. I am doing well and hope to have it go into remission. The doctors and I can do what we have to but it is up to God how long I well be here. May God Bless each and everyone of LAHS Alumni.

October 8, 1999
We have planned lots of activities for
the entire weekend.
Check our web site for details in September.
“Lasting Impressions,” the South Ward Memory book, is still available.
The 30-page book was published by the South Ward Parent School Association in 1995 when the school closed its doors to students. The book recounts the history of South Ward from 1861 – 1995.
Through the use of historical photos and personal interviews, this book commemorates the long history of Lewisburg’s last neighborhood school. Who knows – your picture may have been included in the book!
The book can be purchased at the Union County Historical Society office in the Union County Courthouse or send a $7.00 check payable to: Deb Smith, RR #2 – Box 112A, Winfield, PA 17889. Proceeds will be forwarded to the PSA. The total includes mailing costs.
We have learned that the following classmates have passed away since our last newsletter. Our condolences to their families.

From the Class of 1948
The LAHS Class of 1948 held a very
successful “50th” class reunion the weekend of September
11-13, 1998.
It all began on Friday evening with
a “cruise” on the Hiawatha paddleboat located in Williamsport on
the Susquehanna River. Light
refreshments were provided and the music on deck was strictly the
“40’s.” Everyone
agreed that this “cruise” should be a must for future
reunions. After the cruise many of our
classmates headed to Bechtel’s Dairy for ice cream and all those
forbidden calories!!
On Saturday morning some of the golfers
in the class met at Bucknell University for several rounds of golf and a second
group toured the Lewisburg High School to see firsthand the construction now
underway and to hear about the new developments within the Lewisburg Area
School District.
We all gathered at the Lewisburg
Hotel on Saturday evening for a class picture at 6:30, followed by a gala
banquet at 7:30. There were 90 people in
attendance; 49 were classmates. A
candlelight memorial in memory of our departed classmates was held as we remembered
with joy what each one brought to our lives.
It was a wonderful weekend with beautiful weather, good food, good
friends sharing memories of the past, and good old jukebox music in the
background.
On Sunday morning a few who still
had the energy to get up early met at Christ’s Lutheran Church for the 8
am service and then joined a group of 45 at Country Cupboard for a farewell
brunch at 10 am. Classmates traveled to
be with us from Texas, California, Florida, Washington, Virginia, New Mexico, North
Carolina, New Jersey, and Charlie all the way from Alaska!!
Thanks to all of you who came and
especially to all the people who worked so hard on the committee and with the
committee to make this a celebration to be remembered for a long, long time.
A class booklet was printed and we
have a few copies in our file. If anyone
who was unable to make the reunion would like a booklet, please call June
Solomon at 570-524-7490 or Harold Walters at 570-524-9083 and we’ll mail
one out to you ASAP!
Scholarship Update
The Scholarship Committee has completed
their task of setting the criteria for submitting an application for the $500
LAHS Alumni Association Scholarship. The student must have attended LAHS for
all 4 years, have maintained a 2.5 grade point average, be accepted at a 2 or 4
year school of higher education, be it a technical school, college or
university, and must submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher as well
as a personal letter to the Alumni Association describing his/her interest
areas in and out of school and future education plans.
As of the writing of this article,
11 applications have been received. The
award will be given June 4th.
Be sure to look in our local papers, or for you folks out of town, watch
for our next issue for the announcement of the FIRST LAHS Alumni Association
Scholarship winner.
GREAT COOKS!
The sauce was as good as ever! Again there were great reviews of the
cooks’ abilities. How can we go
wrong with 2 Italians (Angie Giunta and Dave Powell) in the kitchen! Sorry we can’t reveal the recipe
– there isn’t one! There are
pinches of this and pinches of that with lots of taste testing. And assisting them were the Alumni Board
members, plus Dan Voneida’s son Andrew.
Graham Showalter even got his picture in the Lewisburg Daily Journal
– we now have evidence that he has remembered how to scrub floors from
his days of working at Bechtel’s!
The proceeds of the evening $1338.50
were all donated to the Safe and Secure Schools Program. A total of 293 adults and students were
served in addition to the Middle School Students who provided entertainment
– Dawn Lloyd, Danielle Kerlin, Amy Horn, Maggie Miller, Gina Herbst, Adam
Robinson, Courtney Kramm, Jim Swope, Allison Libbey, Callie Hoffman, Clara
Martucci, Paul Mauer, Tiana Pyer-Pereira, Shane Richard, and Chris North. Students also demonstrated the TV equipment
that is used for the morning announcements – Allison Libbey, Kristina
Mills, Ty Hoban, Matt Stan, Andrew Cornelius and Bryan Dugan. This equipment was purchased through the Edna
M. Sheary for Charity – Trust grant monies received last year.

end of this school year. We are

Rededication Held
On Friday, May 28, the Veterans Memorial
Field behind the high school was rededicated following the completion of
construction of the new section of the high school building and parking
lot. A new flagpole was erected, and new
landscaping and a memorial plaque were installed.
The Class of 1946 was instrumental in
raising funds to purchase the field as a “living visible memorial”
to the students of Lewisburg High School who served in WWII.
In addition, a plaque was presented
to the high school in honor of Lt. George H. Ramer, Class of 1944, who fought
in the Korean War and was killed September 12, 1951, at Heartbreak Ridge. Lt. Ramer was awarded the Congressional Medal
of Honor for heroism in sacrificing his life for his men.

THANK YOU’s RECEIVED
Each year The Alumni Association receives
requests from the middle and high school teachers for materials that would
enhance their teaching and would benefit the students. These items are usually cut from the normal
budget requests. These thank you’s
for items purchased in the spring of 1998 were not received in time for our
Fall 1998 newsletter.
From Patti Wetzel – 8th
grade reading teacher: I am writing to
express my thanks for your generous gift to the 8th grade
students. The books you have bought are
being used and treasured right now.
As a new teacher it was overwhelming
to walk into the classroom and decide where to begin. Having a variety of books to choose from was
a dream come true!
The students and I appreciate your
generosity.
From Allison Libbey – 8th
grade student: I would just like to
thank you for the money you have contributed to our school. This past year we have bought the equipment
that made it possible for us to have our morning announcements broadcasted
across the school. I, myself, am one of
the writers and editors of the scripts we use for broadcasting. The equipment we have bought has given me and
the other students who work on the announcements the unique feeling of running
a television program every morning.
Once again, I would just like to
thank you for the contributions you have made and I hope you will continue to
support the many activities in our school.
From the Social Studies Department –
As a successful first half of the school year draws to a close (the
letter was written 1/28/99), the Social Studies Department would like to take
this opportunity to thank you for the maps which you purchased for us through
the Edna Sheary for Charity – Trust.
Al of the maps have been put to good use. It has been very pleasant to teach using
current maps and not to have to write all over our old maps to show the correct
countries of the world
It is because of organizations like yours
that we are able to have these current teaching tools which the school budget
doesn’t always allow for. We
greatly appreciate all of your efforts, and the Middle School Social Studies
Department all feel that your spaghetti is the best! Thanks again for all of your hard work.
From Kenda Roth, Jim Wetzel and Marvin
Schade of the High School Health and Physical Education Department –
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generous
contribution and your help in the purchasing of our new fitness lab and weight
room equipment. We had so hoped that in
writing this, we would be able to tell you how much the staff and the students
were enjoying its use. However, as
renovation projects go, rooms aren’t finished and we have yet to be able
to use any of it. We are positive
though, that when the time does come, all of the equipment will be put to good
use.
It is because of organizations like yours
that we are able to have these additional teaching tools that the school budget
so often does not allow. We truly appreciate
the interest and time you have invested in the Lewisburg School District and
its students. All of the help you have
given over the years is truly recognized, even though we are sure you often do
not receive the acknowledgments and thanks that you very much deserve.
From Richard Runyan, 7th
Grade Reading Specialist – I recently found out that the Alumni
Association and the Edna Sheary Trust Grant are responsible for the wonderful
new perma-bound books that arrived this year.
Although I am not the teacher who placed
the order, I will soon begin using these texts.
They should give many years of service for our students.
Many thanks for your continued interest
in providing quality materials for our instructional program!
From Representatives of the LAMS A.V.
Department – Thank you so very much for the Studio 400 editing system
as well as other video equipment for which you donated the money. With this new equipment, we have the
capability to have school TV up and running, sending the morning school
announcements to every classroom in our building.
We also appreciate the money that you so
graciously donated for the books Johnny Tremain, The Witch of
Blackbird Pond, Lyddie, and Tom Sawyer. Eighth grade students at our Middle School
have been enjoying reading these books as well as others in our reading
classes. All of your very generous
donations are being appreciated by all who use them.
