High School Renovation Overview

The High School renovation project should begin sometime this summer. Look for significant events to begin as soon as school is out this June. A new parking lot will be built on the Route 15 side of the building and the shell of the new addition will be constructed directly behind the current cafeteria. The two-story addition will house a new cafeteria on the first floor and three new science classrooms on the second floor. The athletic field will be re-graded, moved closer to the Catholic Church and still have a regulation size football field behind the school.

Other highlights of the renovation project are:

A critical aspect of the high school renovation is the new athletic complex currently under construction behind the middle school. Next fall we will have a new all-weather track, a new field hockey field and two new soccer fields that will double as softball practice fields. Please stop by the former Pauling property to see the future site of Green Dragon athletic triumphs in the above sports.

We have developed a renovation schedule with our construction management firm that will allow them to complete their work and allow us to deliver our educational program. Although there will be some dust and inconvenience, we are confident that the students will receive a quality education next year. Overall, we are very excited about the renovation project and are grateful to the school board and community for supporting this effort. Please feel free to contact Dr. DiRocco or Dr. Baumgartner if you have any questions or would like to see an overview of this project.

"Mature" Veteran Dragons Victorious

Although hampered by a small number of players (7), the veteran Dragons managed to defeat a similarly undermanned Wildcat team by a 79-73 score in the 7th annual basketball game played at the Mifflinburg High School gym. The win by the dragons broke a three game losing streak to the veteran Wildcats.

The lack of players did not affect the caliber of play or the intensity of the game. Every player on the Dragon squad contributed to the victory. Although no official stats were kept the score, Jeff Wagner '79 and Bobby Orr '72 paced the Dragons offensively, with help from Craig Ranck '72, Paul Miller '74, Dean Hollenbach '78, Graham Showalter '58 and Dave Powell '60. The veteran dragons also controlled the boards with Paul (still a great leaper!), Dean and Craig doing a great job on both ends of the floor. Defense was also a key as the Dragons, who at one time led by 17 points, fought off a late Wildcat rally to preserve the win.

The veteran Dragons will look to make it two in a row next year when they return to Lewisburg Middle School for the contest. The second contest of the night went to the younger Wildcats who won by a ten-point margin. More about that game in the next newsletter.

Notes from Alumni

From Joanne L. Shannon '44:

You are probably already aware that on November 11, 1997, Jeanne Grice Ramer Reichley, Class of '44 gave on permanent loan the Medal of Honor, which was awarded posthumously to Lt. George Ramer, also Class of '44. This medal is housed in a special display case in the Courthouse, along with a portrait, ribbons, and other memorabilia...The Class of '44 donated the funds to pay for the elaborate security system which was installed to protect the display. In fact, this whole transaction and the award ceremony occurred without any cost to the County. Expenses other than the security system were assumed by area veteran's organizations and private donations. (Graham Showalter '58 served on the committee and was in charge of the program at the presentation ceremony.)

From Jeanne Grice Ramer Reichley '44:

Thank you Class of 1944! My sincere thanks to the members of the Class of 1944 who so generously donated for the security system that surrounds the 2nd Lt. George H. Ramer USMCR Medal of Honor Display at the Union County Courthouse in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. I was so pleased to and humbled by this gesture and I can assure you that "Bud" would be also. It was nice seeing so many of you at the ceremony. Again, many thanks to a great class of friends.

From Henry Owen '52:

I just received the Fall 1997 issue of the newsletter and was pleased to see that Dick Jarrett was selected as one of the distinguished alumni. Dick was my Patrol Leader in the old Troop 17 at the Baptist Church when I first joined the Boy Scouts in 1946. From your write-up, it sounds like he has continued with a strong commitment to community service to Lewisburg. I congratulate your selection committee on making such a splendid choice. It is well-deserved recognition.

From Keith Einig '76:

I happened upon the Internet site - VERY well done! Just wanted to let you know that your efforts are appreciated!

It's Reunion Time

To the class of 1948: A committee has been working very hard to make plans for our 50th Class Reunion to be held September 11-13, 1998. A gala weekend will begin on Friday, September 11 with a golf outing and an open reception in the evening; a tour of the Lewisburg High School on Saturday and a banquet Saturday night at the newly refurbished Lewisburg Hotel; early church on Sunday at Christ's Lutheran Church, followed by a brunch at Country Cupboard.

Each class member should have received a letter in January with the date of the reunion and a questionnaire to be returned to Harold Walters. A second letter will go out in late May when all the details have been finalized. If you need any more information or have any suggestions, please contact June Solomon at 717-524-7490 or Harold Walters 717-524-9083. Don't miss this fun-filled weekend!

The Class of 1973 is having our 25th reunion this summer. If you have never been to a reunion, this is the year to come. Everyone that has been to the reunions in the past say, "they get better every year!" It's true, they do get better every year, and this one will be no exception, I'm sure.

Fellow classmate, Ted Biernstein will be hosting the festivities at his restaurant, the Varsity Club, located 1/2 mile south of Bucknell on route 15.

Saturday, August 15th is the night we'll all get together for a buffet dinner and reminisce about our years at LHS. If you're not a graduate of the class of 1973 but would like to see and talk with some people you haven't seen for a while, stop by the Varsity Club on Friday, August 14th for a pre-reunion get together. You'll never know who you'll run into.

Letters and reunion information will be sent out to classmates in June. If you do not get one, please contact Bonnie Voneida at PO Box 126, Lewisburg, PA 17837 (717) 524-0737. Hope to see you there!

Other reunion dates: 1938 - August 19
1943 - June 20
1958 - October 2-3
1963 - July 24-25
1968- July 17-18
1978 - July 18

The third offspring lives in Techachapi, Ca., but I see that family less than I see the other two!

Through the years, I have made quilts - one for each of my 7 grandchildren and one for each of my 6 living great-grandchildren. I now have two step-grandchildren so quilts will need to be made for them.

Spaghetti Dinner

The voter turn-out was poor and so was the number of people who enjoyed our Election Day Spaghetti Dinner. 147 folks enjoyed the homemade sauce expertly prepared by our president Angelo Guinta '58. His helping hands included Dave Powell '60, Shirley Gromlich '56, Jodi Jarrett '75, Bob Brouse '58, and Elsie Morris '57 as well as Judy Bechtel '56 and Barb Baylor '64 at the front of the house. Thanks to these hard workers and to the folks who supported us.

Be sure to put November 3rd on your calendar - this is our Fall Election Day as well as your next opportunity to enjoy our spaghetti. Remember - takeouts are available if you prefer the comfort of your own home or are in a hurry! Of course, it's always great to chat with fellow alumni as well as your friends and neighbors in the middle school cafeteria!

Funds Received From Trust

The Edna M. Sheary for Charity Trust has again provided funds for educational tools that were requested from various curriculums at the middle and high schools. The Foundation Board presented the check for $37,903.00 to the District officials at the school board meeting on May 28th.

Each of the curriculum leaders were asked to present a list of items that would enhance their teaching but were not part of the budget or have been cut from the budget, justifying each item with specifications. The Language Arts Dept. requested perma-bound books which are not considered text-books; the Social Studies Dept. requested new maps; the Libraries requested CD-ROM towers for teachers to incorporate the multi-media experience for classroom activities; the Math Dept. requested scientific and graphing calculators; the Art Dept. requested an art rack, a digital camera, and equipment for a dark room; the middle school requested equipment to complete their TV studio for creation of video announcements, broadcasting, and video projects; and the Phys. Ed. Dept. requested equipment for the fitness lab. This will eventually be available for staff and public use.

The Foundation Board is extremely grateful to Mrs. Sheary for her insight and her generosity in providing an avenue to continue making an impact in so many lives even after her death. Our gratitude extends to the selection committee for their approval. The Lewisburg students are the beneficiaries of your decision.
