LEWISBURG AREA HIGH SCHOOL

A Bi-Annual newsletter for alumni and friends

Spring 2002

News from the Board of Directors

At their January meeting, the Alumni Association Board of Directors decided to mail this newsletter to all graduates for whom we have correct addresses!  The decision was made to encourage grads to support our organization through the payment of our annual dues of $5.00 (for newsletter printing and mailing and for donations to the school) and to encourage all graduates with upcoming address changes to contact us.  With the county emergency response centers requiring house numbers and street names, many changes need to be made to our records.  Only you can help!

The Board, under the leadership of Jodi Jarrett ’75, is working on a project of putting football films on videotape, is cooperating with a group of interested Lewisburg grads and parents in raising funds for new equipment for the strength and fitness center at the high school, is discussing web-site offerings, is working in opening communications with the School Board and administration, as well as continuing our ongoing projects of the election day Spaghetti Dinner, selecting distinguished alumni, updating the class agent volunteers and encouraging donations to the Scholarship Fund.  We welcome new Board members Lisa Walters Black, ’76, Dick Pursell ’61, Nan Deitz Keiser ’68, Linda Jones Vaji ’76, Tim Jarrett ’73, and John Shaw ’85.

Strengthening Our Bond

by Kathy Swope

As Vice President of the Lewisburg Area Board of School Directors, I will have the honor of serving as liaison between the school board and the Alumni Association under a new initiative to strengthen relations.  I am looking forward to working with your board of directors.

Over the years, I have viewed the Association with admiration and gratitude.  The sense of commitment to the young people of our community and  the pride exhibited by the members of your organization are commendable.  The donation of much needed items that the district budget could never provide is more than appreciated, it is truly valued.  On behalf of the Board, the students, parents, and our community, thank you for all you have done.  As we move forward, I hope that I can be of some help to you, but mostly I am excited that I will have a role in your future plans and ideas.

All of you who call Lewisburg Area High School your Alma Mater have a special bond.  You represent generations of successful education in our community.  You have spread to all parts of the world and carry a piece of Lewisburg with you.  The shadow of your presence and the echo of your voices still linger in the halls of our schools.

Address Changes Needed

The Union County Commissioners have an on-going project assigning street addresses to everyone living in the County to assist in emergency situations.  Once you have been given your new house number and street address, please notify the Alumni Association.  It will be a gigantic task changing all rural addresses on our data base so any advanced notification would be appreciated.

Carol Rockwell Sullivan ’33 comments—The historical sketch in the recent Alumni Directory was most interesting, but I would like to comment on the statement that the gymnasium was not used until 1931.  As an entering freshman in 1929 I went out for girls’ basketball, and Coach Heckart was training me to play forward—until in a scramble my glasses were broken and my parents ended my career at that sport.  I can testify that in the fall of  1929 we were playing basketball in the LHS gymnasium.

John H. Beck ’51 performed a timpani concerto entitled “Harmonic Rhythm” by Russell Pick with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra on March 15 and 17, 2001.

Orland B. Hanselman ’77 was named the Large Business Entrepreneur 2001 Winner in Pa.  He is the chairman, president and CEO of AmeriServe Financial Inc.

Barbara Teter Greeley ’67 and her husband were married in October 2000 and had a wonderful 10 day honeymoon in England.  They are now planning a trip to Ireland.

Steve Kline ’90 eagerly awaits the start of spring training with the St. Louis Cardinals.  In the off-season Kline resides in Winfield and stays in shape by serving as a volunteer coach at the Lewisburg High School.  Recently, Kline spent a day hoping to make a contribution towards the next generation of potential professional baseball pitchers by helping out at a local pitching clinic for area athletes.  Kline believes it is important to go back to your roots and give back to the people next in line.  He feels today’s athletes on the scholastic level want to learn and are willing to listen, especially to someone who has been through it all.

From Arthur Lilley ’01 – I would like to take the time to thank you for the financial aid that you have awarded to me.  Everything is greatly appreciated.  Thank You!

Class of 1941

The Lewisburg Class of 1941 celebrated their 60th class reunion on Friday night, June 15, 2001, with a gathering at the Town Tavern.  On Saturday morning we had a tour of the High School.  Saturday evening our social hour and banquet were held at the Brynwood Banquet Center.  We were entertained by slides of “Old Lewisburg,” presented by Betty Cook ’46 and Ruth Blankenship.  On Sunday morning we enjoyed breakfast at Country Cupboard.  Fun was had by all!  We are now looking forward to our Class picnic to be held June 22, 2002.  We have been holding a picnic each summer since 1997.

MMMM…MMMM…Good!

What’s election day without our Alumni Spaghetti Dinner!  The cooks did it again—the sauce was superb, as was the bread (thanks to Butter Krust Bakery), salad fixings (thanks to Weis Markets for their help), the cupcakes from Keeley’s (thanks to Graham Showalter), the beverages and spices (from Country Cupboard) and supplies (from Bechtel’s Dairy).  Lots of people helped our cause—workers and customers!  We served 358 dinners making $1664.00.  We will be using these funds toward school projects.  Many thanks to our Board members for all the efforts put forth to make this a successful event.

Be sure to mark us on your engagement calendars for the May election – May 21, 2002!

A Tribute to Two Outstanding School Superintendents

Robert E. Beckman (1904-2001) began his career at Lewisburg High School in 1944 as a math and social studies teacher after teaching in the Sunbury schools for 18 years.  He formed Lewisburg’s first band and led it to several state-wide championships in the late 1940’s and early 50’s.  In 1950 he accepted the position of superintendent of the Lewisburg Area Schools and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1969.  During his tenure, the new South Ward, Kelly Elementary and the Middle Schools were constructed and the Lewisburg schools attained a reputation as an exceptional education system.  As an able administrator, he was respected by the school boards, the faculty, the staff, the students and the community.

Mr. Beckman began a music affiliation with Bucknell University when he directed the BU Band from 1942 to 1950.  He joined the music faculty as an instructor of woodwind instruments in 1969, and continued in that capacity until 1986.  He played in the BJ Jazz Orchestra and gave periodic music recitals, the last one at the Weis Center in 1991 at the age of 87.

Mr. Beckman was also well known as a believer in physical fitness and could be seen riding his bicycle throughout the three-county area and beyond.  He began riding during the World War II gas shortage and continued until age 91.  For years he had a daily regime of push-ups and pull-ups.

Donald H. Eichhorn (1932-2001) became the Lewisburg Area School District Superintendent in 1979, coming from the Upper St. Clair School District in Pittsburgh.  Dr. Eichhorn is respected nationally and internationally for his work with early adolescents.  He wrote “The Middle School” in 1965, a work which became the cornerstone and guiding force for the emerging middle school movement in the US and abroad.  He received many awards even after his retirement, including a second Distinguished Service Award from the National Middle School Association for his vision, leadership and accomplishments.  The Middle School Association also dedicated their annual national conference to him in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the publication of his book.  The Pa Middle School Association presented him with their Achievement Award and established the annual Donald H. Eichhorn Award for the Outstanding Middle School in Pa.  The Lewisburg Middle School received this award in April 2000 when Dr. Eichhorn presented this award to Floyd Walters, Middle School Principal.  In addition to pioneering the middle school concept, Dr. Eichhorn began a maintenance program with the help of the custodial and maintenance departments to develop a 10-year plan to upgrade facilities.  He battled with Parkinson’s disease for 21 years.  The Lewisburg School Board is now considering renaming the middle school to honor Dr. Eichhorn.

WWII Vets Can Get Diplomas

Honorary diplomas can now be awarded to veterans who didn’t finish school due to entering military service, thanks to a special program approved last year by the state legislature.  There is an application process in which a copy of the discharge papers is required.  Charles Meachum ’38 is very interested in finding the names of those male and female students who did not graduate from Lewisburg High School for such a reason.  If anyone can help with possible names of classmates, the Alumni Association can serve as a conduit to see that the honorary degree can be granted to those who served our country.  Please write the Alumni Association at PO Box 3l8, Lewisburg, PA 17837.

Alumni Basketball Game

Mifflinburg Alumni basketball teams will be holding on to the “Little Brown Jug” until next December after they defeated our Lewisburg teams during the exciting play December 21, 2001.  There were no injuries and hopefully even more players will be available to play next year.  It is rumored that Lewisburg even had to borrow some of the Mifflinburg players in the first game.

Those participating in the 1981-2001 (the Junior Varsity Alumni!) game were Brian Bertram, Tim Brouse, Craig Hoffman, Kevin Kline, Joshua Llanso, Ryder Mathias, Kevin Meese, Jeremy Roskovensky, and Joseph Saultz.  Those representing the 1929-1980 team were Ted Biernstein, Clark Grenoble, Dean Hollenbach, Bob Orr, Dave Powell, Craig Ranck, Graham Showalter, Paul Showalter, and Jeff Wagner.  Serving as coaches were Brian Bertram and Graham Showalter.

Perhaps some alumni cheerleaders are needed to encourage the team and to act as a diversion for the opposition.  Anyone willing to organize a squad?

Dates To Remember

Spaghetti Dinner – May 21, 2002

Homecoming – October 11, 2002 (Tentative)

Tidbits…

John Machamer ’74 is looking for a copy of the 1974 Oneida.  Please notify the Alumni Association if you know if one is available.

Our thanks to Isabella Romig Renninger ’32, Thelma Slack Duck ’34, Sarah Blouch Bergstresser ’57 and  Christine Close Brinker ’72 for sending their personal mementos and pictures to the history committee for our archives.  It was such fun to open their packages.  We hope that these items can be shared in some fashion.  Also received was the pennant from the Class of 1929, donated by the family of Melvin R. Weiser ’29.

Incidentally, the history committee will be setting a date in the spring to go through the many boxes in the basement of the high school.  Want to help in the search—call or write Jodi Jarrett.

The Class of 1933  meets the last Monday of each month at 12:30 at Country Cupboard.  Anywhere from 8 to 15 people turn out!

The Class of 1958 challenges other classes to join in raising money for our Scholarship Fund.  At their class reunion (in 1998) they solicited pledges encouraging a $60.00 donation each year for 10 years.  They raised over $8000 in gifts and pledges.  Since then they have learned that no other class has met their challenge.  So to those classes having a reunion this year (the 2’s and the 7’s) talk it up and see what you can do!

A suggestion was made to have all past cheerleaders and dragons join in the Homecoming festivities in 2002.  Karen Teichman ‘71has offered to assist in organizing this part of the weekend activities.  If you are interested in participating, please contact her at teichman@ptd.net.

Thanks to Jeanne Grice Ramer Reichley, Edwin G. Johnson and many others for helping to identify the members of the class of 1917.

Thank you to those graduates who donated to the Scholarship Fund in memory of Mr. Beckman.

Thank you to Sylvia Snyder Coup ’59 who donated a green and white afghan for a raffle prize for one of our alumni events.

Remember the Spastics???

The SPASTICS were popular from 1960-1963—they sang songs from groups like The Everly Brothers, The Ventures, and Buddy Holly—they were Lewisburg’s first splash hop band and the first live band to play Stamm’s dance hall in Milton.

This trio of Jim Wetzel ’58, Dave Rein ’62 (now from Charleston, SC) and George Diefenbach ’58 (now from Seattle, WA) met again in November at Buffalo Bills to play before a crowd of fans while they reminisced about their music and their good times.  Out came the band’s original Fender guitar, which the group purchased for $250 after pooling their funds.  Their other guitars came from a Harrisburg pawnshop.  Jim also commented that George made the acoustic guitars electric with the cartridge from a record player.  George also wired up his 1949 Plymouth so they could play music from its speakers.  Dave Rein was the most musically inclined and taught George how to play.  Jim also remarked that they were popular not because they were good, but that they were the only ones around!  They even have a record to their name-- ”Destiny” written by George.

Want to know when the next performance is scheduled—call the Spastics Fan Club at 524-0773!

LAHS Graduation Projects

Beginning with the class of 2002, all students at LAHS must complete a graduation project in order to graduate.  The graduation project should be thought of as a culminating experience of high school.  The project will promote independent thinking and is adaptable to different learning styles.  The student will choose the topic of the project, write a proposal, which needs to be approved by his/her advisor, work on the project independently, and present the project to the Graduation Project Committee for approval.  The project may be any of the types:  curriculum-related, school improvement, community, entrepreneur, personal interest, or career-related projects.  Some of the projects completed by students in the class of 2002 are:  tutoring services for younger students, original music composition, web sites, volunteering at the community center, painting murals, coaching youth sports, and job shadowing in search of career interests.  The LAHS Alumni Association benefited from one of these projects.  Alex Urosevich and Jeff Isenberg held an under 21 dance at the community center and donated $354.00 to the Association.

Class of 1956 Holds 45th Reunion

Friday, October 26, 2001, began the festivities for the 45th year reunion of the Class of 1956 with thirty classmates and guests, gathering for an informal evening of conversation and refreshments at Buffalo Bill’s Grill and Saloon on Route 15 South.  One highlight of the evening was the first time reunion appearance of Bob “Bean” Shannon and his wife Carol from Escalon, California.  Reminiscing and the swapping of tales (some believable and some not so believable) were high on the evening’s agenda.

The memorable weekend event continued on Saturday evening with a group photograph (accomplished with a wide angle lens) followed by an excellent dinner at the renovated Lewisburg Hotel.  Thirty-six (gracefully graying) classmates and their guests gathered from Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, Florida, Massachusetts, Arizona, New York, and California.  “Hi-Lites” for Saturday evening included the first time reunion appearance of Ken Ricker and his wife Barbara from Delaware.  Two retired teachers joined the class for dinner:  Mrs. Elizabeth Gardner Shuler and Mrs. Margaret Kauffman Candrick.  The former Miss Gardner revealed to the class, for the first time, the degree of fright that she had experienced as she began her career teaching biology to our class.  An anonymous comment was heard from one of the female members of the group, “It’s a good thing we didn’t know that!”  Much to the delight of many of the class musicians, a surprise visit was made by former band director, Mr. John Leister.  Time was taken to remember our six departed classmates.  The group also acknowledged the fact that class member Winston Sturgen had received the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award this year.

Sunday breakfast was held at the Country Cupboard Restaurant where thirty-five class members and guests continued to enjoy each others company.  Many expressed their appreciation to our eight local classmates for their efforts in planning and carrying out a most enjoyable weekend.  Members of the group left the restaurant saying their good-byes and expressing their hope at seeing even more of our classmates at our 50th reunion in the year 2006.

George Hurst ’51 took a keen interest in working with leather throughout his school days which has led to a career he still loves today.  Soon after graduating from high school, George served in the US Army as a staff sergeant in the Korean War.  Upon his return he took a job in Philadelphia as an assistant manager of a Tandy Leather Store and taught leather craft classes at night.  After holding a manager position at several east coast Tandy Leather stores, George progressed through the ranks of area, district and regional manager, all the while continuing to teach classes and to be very active in numerous Leathercrafting Guilds.

In 1981 George began to work for The Leather Factory where he designed and engineered all of their leather craft kits.  In 1984 he returned to Tandy Leather as a regional manager in the Southeast Division and in 1985 he was promoted to be the national marketing and merchandising manager.  Upon his retirement in 1996 he opened his own store, Hide Crafter Leathercrafter in his new hometown of Fort Worth, Texas.

For many years George has very willingly done workshops for the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4H, churches, YMCA, and other youth groups.  He not only sells supplies and does workshops for leather crafters, he writes articles, textbooks, and produces instructional videos.  In 1991 he received the prestigious Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in Leathercraft.

Andrew Machamer ’40 earned his BS in Engineering from Bucknell University and began a 48 year career with American Home Foods, where he served as a Design Engineer before moving up to Vice-President and Plant Engineer.  After his retirement Drew continued to act as a consultant to them.  He also served his country as a carrier qualified fighter pilot in the US Navy during World War II.

Andrew has been actively involved in the Lewisburg community throughout his lifetime.  He has been a member of the American Legion, the Navy League, the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum, a Director of the West Milton State Bank, a Director of the West Branch Manufacturer’s Association, a Director of PA Food Processors, a life member of the Northumberland, Snyder, and Berk’s County Historical Societies, and a board member of the Union County Historical Society.  He helped to move and restore the 1954 Pawling house which used to be on the sight of the current Lewisburg Athletic Fields.  He is an active member of the Union County 4th of July Parade Committee and is currently involved in the WWII Memorial Project.  He has been most helpful and interested in the history of the High School.  He and his wife Ellen ’41 have 5 children who graduated from LAHS – Debora, Abby, Drew (deceased), Susan, and John.

Winston Sturgen ’56 began his artistic career at age 8 with simultaneous interests in drawing and photography.  During his public school years he explored photography, painting, jewelry making, as well as music.  His college studies led to degrees in Forest Management, Wood Utilization, Economics, and Doctoral studies in Business Administration.  For the next 15 years, while raising a family, he worked in these fields and continued to explore his artistic interests.  By 1980, he owned and operated an advertising design and photographic studio.  Since 1985 he had devoted his full energies to exploring his personal vision through painting, printmaking and photography.  He has learned images by looking and has taught himself techniques that will support and define his vision.

Winston has been invited to present programs to working photographers and painters, to jury exhibitions, to teach photography in college sponsored classes, and he has been an active member, director and officer of several professional and community organizations.

Despite physical disabilities that worsened significantly in late 1985, Winston has continued to create images and to grow in his work.  He believes in giving back to the community in which he lives.  He has been recognized as an advocate for disabled artists.  His work has been exhibited internationally and is included in several major and many professional collections.
