LEWISBURG AREA HIGH SCHOOL

A bi-annual newsletter for alumni and friends

Winter 2001

INFORMATION NEEDED

In the process of gathering the data for the new Alumni Directory, we were not able to locate the names of the graduates for the following years:  1904, 1905, 1909, 1910, 1911, 1912, 1913, 1914 and 1916 thru 1925.  There are boxes of information in the basement of the high school just waiting for someone to organize the material.  Fortunately someone from the PSA gathered some of the graduation programs which listed names of participants, which we in turn presented to Harris Publishing.  So if you have a family member who graduated in one of these years or have a box of memorabilia sitting in your attic, we are asking if you would take some time to research for any pertinent data.  If you would like to donate any old high school newspapers, yearbooks, or other mementos, please contact Barbara Baylor.  A committee will be formed to properly preserve the materials in a central but secure location.

We also found the following list of graduates without a year:  Robert W. Angstadt, Edna M. Baker, Harold F. Baney, Faylene B. Beaver, Mildred A. Beaver, Sarah M. Bernhartd, Willard H. Collins, Ralph J. Dull, James M. Earle, F. Emmalene Fisher, Ruth E. Gast, Miriam G. Gast, Albert Goho, Edward F. Heim, J. Leo Hess, Ruth I. Johnson, Joseph C. Johnson, Sarah A. Kerstetter, Martha E. ALUMNI DIRECTORY TO BE PUBLISHED

A new LAHS Alumni Directory is being prepared by the Harris Publishing Company.  The Alumni Association mailing list was sent to our Harris representative last fall as well as editorial information for the beginning of the book.  The company has mailed post cards to all graduates (have you received your yellow card in the mail???  Better yet – have you responded???).  The publishing team is in the process of collecting the most current biographical information – your address, professional data, spouse’s and children’s names and a new feature – your e-mail address.  The directory will make it easy for any of us to find old friends and to network.

For this project to be successful, we are asking all LAHS graduates to call the toll free number 1-800-527-2907.  Updates can also be faxed to 1-800-860-9085, sent via e-mail to gcupdate@bcharrispub.com or by regular mail to The Lewisburg Area High School Alumni Directory Project, c/o Harris Graduate Connection, 6300 Center Drive, Norfolk, Va. 23602.  You can also help by asking your fellow classmates if they have responded yet.  The information will be accepted until April 9, 2001, at which time the publishing/printing process begins.  The directories will be available only from Harris Publishing (not the Alumni Association) in August.

***On February 6, 2001, we received the following information from Harris Publishing Company:

                                        2540 alumni have responded

710 alumni have reserved a copy

They feel this response rate is in line with their goals and expectations.  With only eight weeks remaining in the phoning process, they are utilizing the 800 extensively to provide those who are difficult to reach the opportunity to call at their convenience.

LAHS Teachers in Who’s Who

Four LAHS teachers out of approximately 2 million teachers in America have been selected as the Best Teachers in America.  Jonathan Clark and Susan Overdorf teach math, Roberta Pickering teaches English and Geoffrey Goodenow teaches science.  The only way a teacher can be included in this publication is to be nominated by one or more of his or her former students.  The only students who are invited to select their former teachers are students who are listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Students or The National Dean’s List.  Congratulations!

Moving??

We are having trouble keeping up!  People are on the move!  Won’t you please keep us informed?  Send your new address to us at PO Box 38, Lewisburg, PA 17837.  Or if you know of a classmate who recently moved, please drop us a note.

We are also aware that many of the counties in Pa. are changing the rural addresses to numbered street addresses.  So even if you haven’t moved to a new home but are one of many who are changing from RR#___, please let us know your new address.  Changing records as soon as possible helps not only the Alumni Association but your individual classes, since they usually come to us for our most recent listing when planning a reunion.  THANK YOU FOR HELPING!

Thank You Class of 1945

We gratefully acknowledge and sincerely thank the Class of 1945 for their $200.00 donation to the LAHS Foundation Scholarship Fund.  You are helping to set an example for other classes to join in preparing future LAHS graduates in makng a significant contribution to society.

Lewisburg School District’s Strategic Plan

The Lewisburg Area School District is continuing to proceed in the development of a Strategic Plan that will guide its educational programs over the next six years.  Four committees consisting of parents, educators, and community members have worked through the fall of 2000 to complete several components of the strategic plan.  Booklets are available that contain reports and accomplishments.  School district officials are now seeking feedback and suggestions from the community, parents, students, and staff regarding the plan.  Please contact Dr. Mark DiRocco, Assistant Superintendent, at 208 South 4th Street, Lewisburg, PA 17837, (570)522-3204 or dirocco@dragon.k12.pa.us to get a copy of the plan and a feedback form.  This part of the process will end March 1, 2001.  The complete strategic plan will be presented to the Lewisburg Area School Board of Directors in late April or early May for review and approval.  The plan will then be forwarded to the Pa.
