Mark Your CalendarHomecoming - October 20
It's time to plan for fall! LAHS Homecoming is planned for October 20th starting with a parade leaving the high school, a football game at Bucknell Stadium, and a gathering at Brynwood on 6th following the game. Hope you can join us for a fun evening. There will be other events as well as other opportunities to gather planned for that weekend. Please check our website for updates.
Alumni Directory
We are working once again with Harris Publishers on the Alumni Directory which will be published in 2001. In preparation for the publication, we are searching for our lost classmates, checking class lists for omissions from our last publication, and updating our records of deceased classmates. If by chance you are willing to help without being called, please let us know by writing us at our PO Box 38 address.
Please be reminded that we only provide the database for the publication. Harris Publishers handles EVERYTHING else - searching for missing addresses, contacting each graduate by mail, compiling the data, printing, selling, and distribution. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us by writing us at our PO Box 38 address.
Scholarships Awarded
Michael Conard and Brian Moles are the proud recipients of the year 2000 Alumni Scholarships. The presentation was made at the Awards Assembly June 7th. The Foundation Board of Directors voted to allocate $1000.00 from the general fund this year thereby providing two $500.00 scholarships and allowing the scholarship investment funds to grow. Thus far approximately $29,000.00 has been donated or pledged toward the scholarship progam.
Michael will be studying art education for the elementary grades at Lycoming College. He served as president of the Key Club in his senior year and was active in the school newspaper, yearbook, National Art Honor Society, French Club, fall play, spring musical, choir, and District Chorus.
Brian will be attending the Univeristy of Connecticut studying business and possibly vocal performance. He has participated in numerous spring musicals, the concert and chamber choirs, District and Regional Choruses, soccer, track and field, and the National Art Honor Society.
We wish both young men success as theyfurther their education.

Gerald '33 and Maybelle Wolf Kunkle '35 - We enjoy receiving the newsletter. The news of older alumni is getting scarce. If I write about Maybelle and me, perhaps it will stimulate others to do some writing. We have been married 61 years. We have been in CA 30 years since retirement. We have 2 daughters, 2 grand-daughters, and one great-granddaughter. One family is split-1/2 living in NY and 1/2 living in CA. I taught school for a few years and then had a 10 year hitch in the army. We had 2 years overseas service in England, Africa and Italy. I was returned to the states because of a permanent injury received in combat in Italy. After several years in unsuccessful medical treatment, my army career ended and I was retired Lt. Colonel. I was able to return to teaching and accepted a position in 1950 at LHS. I had the pleasure of starting the first Vocational Industrial Education program at my Alma Mater. We moved to CA in 1970. Would be pleased to hear from any interested LHS grads and teachers.

We have 11 employees with a branch office in Cork, Ireland, which covers Europe. While I have not yet retired, I am decreasing my work to allow more time for golf.
Fran Galbreath '39 - Congratulations to all those great alumni who have put our school and town on the map. How well I do remember all the wonderful teachers we had and the activities we enjoyed together. I enjoyed the school fairs, helping sell candy at the games, being in the dramatic club and some of the fun skits in chapel, the girl's ensemble, the community Christmas programs, and which of us can forget the intermural sports.

Veteran Green Dragons Rise To the Occasion
The ninth annual Lewisburg-Mifflinburg alumni game was held May 6 at the Lewisburg middle school gym. It was a hot humid night and the competition was as hot as the weather as the veteran dragons prevailed 65-53 and the more recent Lewisburg grads lost 84-70. Members of both dragon teams were called upon for yeoman duty as each squad had a limited number of players.
In the first game (1981-1999 grads) Lewisburg had 5 players and the effects of the weather took its toll on those players. Playing and scoring for the recent grads were Bob Wollum '85 21 points, Tim Brouse '85 3 points, Michael Curtis '85 17 points, Brian Bertram '86 19 points, and Eric Keefer '85 10 points. Although they lost, these younger Dragons showed a lot of the skills that made them outstanding players in high school. Bobby Wollum's shooting and passing, and Brian Bertram's drives to the hoops that resulted in great shots or feeds were fun to watch.
In the second game (1930-1980 grads) there were 7 players suited up for the game. Craig Ranck '72 led the old guard with 20 points, Phil Stamm Jr. '78 chipped In with 17, Jeff Wagner '79 directed the dragon attack and added 13 points, Dave Powell '60 contributed 3 treys for 9 points, Paul Miller '74 did a great job on the boards and scored 4 points. Graham Showalter, although bothered by leg problems, played with great enthusiasm and scored 2 points, and, also making an appearance was Phil Stamm '53 who showed he still has that great shooting form that made him a prolific scorer in the days when he played for LHS.
This annual affair is looked forward to by both teams and although the steps may be a little slower, the heart is just as determined as always, and it is very rewarding to see some of the passes that are made, moves that still delight, and shooting skills that have not diminished much over the years. We invite you to come out for an evening of fun at next year's contest.
So Long, Farewell, AufWeidersehen, Adieu
On December 1, 1999, after four years as Palisades' principal, Mr. Roy bid us goodbye and became the principal of Springfield High S chool. "I'm very sorry to see him go, " stated senior Anthony Wardle. This is the sentiment of many of the students, especially the seniors, who have been under Mr. Roy's leadership for their entire high school career. "I can't believe he is leaving, " lamented senior Cheryl Rolison. "He is such a good guy and a great principal."
The principal himself expressed sorrow at leaving the school, but knows he is making the right decision. Springfield High School is closer to Mr. Roy's family members and his wife's workplace. Mr. Roy also feels as though he would like a new challenge. He has proven to Palisades that he is capable of running a school effectively and successfully: now he must prove it elsewhere, and this is a perfect opportunity.
Nevertheless, Mr. Roy does not intend to abandon his old school completely. Some of his fondest memories are the relationships he has formed with PHS students and he plans to visit Palisades whenever possible.
(This is an excerpt from an article in the school paper for Palisades High School by Suzanne Wardle about LAHS graduate Joe Roy, '80.)
Middle School Receives Award
The Lewisburg Area Middle School received the Donald Eichhorn Award for being the best in the State. Characteristics of an exemplary middle school include interdisciplinary team teaching, age appropriate instruction, flexible scheduling, varied instruction, an advisory program, exploratory programs, transition programs, and skill development and knowledge. Principal Floyd Walters gives lots of credit to the teachers, parents, and staff. Local photographer John Gardner recorded the event with an all school photo taken outside the school. How did he get all the students, faculty, support staff and Dr. Eichhorn in the picture? He was on a lift donated by John Driver of West Branch Rental. The PA Middle School Association Award is named for former Lewisburg superintendent Dr. Donald Eichhorn, who was one of the first proponents in the nation for middle schools in which a child is in transition from early childhood to teenage.

Academic Honors Banquet, by Superintendent William Torok
The Academic Honors Banquet for secondary students was envisioned six years ago by three parents and me who wanted to create a special formalized way to recognize academic achievement. In Lewisburg's schools, at that time, most banquets honored extracurricular activities. We felt it was a shame that academic achievement was not recognized at least to the level of these activities.
The only standard for being invited to the banquet is that students must have been on the honor roll four consecutive times. Students who are recognized all three years in the middle school will have their names placed on a plaque at the end of eighth grade. Students who are recognized in the high school will have their names placed on a plaque at the end of their senior year. Students who are recognized for seven years (grades 6-12) will have their names placed on another special plaque. Sixth grade students are invited to a punch and cookie reception at the middle school in May. Students in grades 7 through 12 are invited to a formal dress-up banquet at Bucknell University. The dinner is free for each invited student. All students are given medallions as an award.
The Honors Banquet has become one of the most anticipated events on the school district calendar. The high school jazz-rock band provides entertainment. A special guest provides a keynote address. This year's speaker was Dr. Eugene Hickok, Pennsylvania Secretary of Education. Waiters and waitresses serve a formal meal. Green and white linen and tablecloths are used, and green-tinted flowers are on the tables. Each parent or guardian receives a Lewisburg pin and an honors bumper sticker.
The honoring of these students is made possible through private financial support. The school district does not fund the activity. Employees volunteer their time. Although I have developed some partnerships with various companies, most of the funding comes through individual donations. Anyone who supports the idea of recognizing academic success is asked to please provide financial
support.

With Our Sympathy
Mariah Quant '00 was killed in an auto accident just hours before she was to receive her diploma at the Weis Center June 9th. Commencement was marked with a bittersweet atmosphere and expressions of joy and sorrow. Colorful bandannas, one of Mariah's trademarks, were worn around the left arms of classmates, faculty, school board members, friends, and family as a sign of mourning.
Mariah was active in cross-country, track and field, National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, and the National Spanish Honor Society. As the Class of 2000 mourns her untimely death, let us remember how much she contributed to our school and community.
Corrections from the last Newsletter
*Mrs. Edna Sheary, whose Charity Trust generously provided educational materials to the Lewisburg Middle and High Schools, was a cashier and trust officer at the Union National Bank of Lewisburg (now Mellon Bank) not the Lewisburg National Bank as written.
*Sara Reish Hall '28 is still living at a Masonic Home in Burlington, NJ. We erronously assumed that the returned newsletter marked "Deceased" was accurate. We certainly regret the error. She will be celebrating her 90th birthday in July.
A Tribute to Mrs. Pursley
(From the Saturday, April 8, 2000 Standard-Journal Newspaper - the Personsal View Column on
Page 4 - written by John Huckaby '60)
A teacher who won't be forgotten
Teachers do make impressions - some good and some bad. There wasn't any doubt about the impression that Mrs. Mildred Pursley made through her many years at Lewisburg High.
Mrs. Pursley, who died this week at age 92, was one of those teachers who inspired some, created great fear in others, and who was a real credit to her profession.
She and her close friend, Mrs. Jennie Erdley, were legends at Lewisburg High. You didn't want to cross either one. They made sure there was a learning atmosphere in their classes. You learned in their classes - it was a requirement. Class time was spent on learning . There weren't any film strips, any short films. There were no help-me-teach aids like there are today.
Mrs. Pursley and Mrs. Erdley, both widows, had a genuine concern for their students. They wanted their students to be prepared when they went to college. They didn't want any remedial English for any of their students.
Both are now gone. But I'm sure that Mrs. Pursley's death this week brought back a lot of memories for a lot of former students. Both of her and Mrs. Erdley.
They don't make teachers like that anymore.
